Literary Criticism Conference in the Dominican Republic

The First Conference on Literary Criticism in the Dominican Republic, organized by the Ministry of Culture, will be held on February 24-25, 2012, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Santo Domingo.

The opening ceremony of the Conference on Literary Criticism will be held on February 24, at 10:00am, with an address by Minister of Culture José Rafael Lantigua. The closing ceremony on February 25, at 6:00pm with the reading of the findings, will be led by poet Basilio Belliard, with writers and Valentín Hernández and Ángela Amaro.

Literary management director and conference coordinator Basilio Belliard predicts “a very high-level and intellectually solid conference.” He adds that “the seminar will try to address many questions related to the future projection and development of Dominican literary life and to establish guidelines for the awareness and dissemination of national literature.”

A total of 22 writers and critics from the Dominican Republic and abroad will participate. Some of the confirmed presenters are Diógenes Céspedes, Manuel Matos Moquete, Bruno Rosario Candelier, José Enrique García, Odalís Pérez, Manuel Núñez, and Manuel García Cartagena. Dominican literature experts from abroad include Rita Maesenner (Belgium), Esther Gimbernat (United States), and Nina Bruni (Trinidad and Tobago).

Participants include Dominicans writers established in the U.S.—such as Miguel Aníbal Perdomo, Silvio Torres-Saillant, and Médar Serrata—or in Puerto Rico—such as Eugenio García Cuevas, and Miguel Ángel Fornerín.
