AP reports that celebrity Oprah Winfrey and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan will coincide in Haiti as they work on separate projects to benefit the Caribbean country.
Farrakhan explained that he intends to “listen, learn and share” and learn more about Haitian culture and religious practices. At the same time, he will be exploring ways in which his organization can help Haiti rebuild from the devastating 2010 earthquake. According to AP news, Haitian Foreign Minister Laurent Lamorthe met Farrakhan at the airport, and the Nation of Islam leader was expected to meet later in the week with President Michel Martelly. About his trip, Farrakhan declared, “I have longed throughout my life to set my foot in the sacred soil of Haiti.”
Meanwhile, President Martelly, who will meet with Oprah Winfrey on Monday, hopes that the talk show host will serve as a goodwill ambassador for Haiti; her participation would boost aid to the country. Winfrey is expected to visit a settlement camp for displaced people run by Hollywood actor Sean Penn and his aid group J/P HRO on Monday. She is also expected to meet with fashion designer Donna Karan, who has celebrated the work of Haiti’s artisans through her Urban Zen Foundation since the quake.
