The Florida-based theatre company, FUNDarte, will represent the United States at the International Theatre Festival in Havana. The company will perform the play on October 30 and 31, 2011 at the Trianon Theatre, a festival venue located in Havana’s El Vedado neighborhood.
FUNDarte will present the play “Si vas a sacar un cuchillo, úsalo” [If you are going to pull out a knife, use it], a bilingual dance-theatre piece based on the works of Samuel Beckett. It will star Carlos Caballero, a Cuban actor who resides in Miami, and Elizabeth Doud, an American ballerina and choreographer.
Some among South Florida’s theater community praised the news, saying it represented a new era of openness. Others, like actor and director Marcos Casanova of the Hispanic Theater Guild based in Theater 8 in Little Havana, said he would’ve passed up the invitation because accepting it would mean having to deal directly with a Cuban government institution.
FUNDarte is a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to producing, presenting, and promoting music, theater, dance, film and visual arts that speak to Miami’s diverse cultures with an emphasis on Hispanic arts and culture.
