Bye Bye BBC Caribbean

The BBC Caribbean Service was officially shut down on Friday, the victim of budget cuts by the BBC World Service. A special broadcast of BBC World Have Your Say was the last thing listeners heard, according to the Caribarena Antigua site.

It featured commentary from reporters in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Antigua.
BBC Caribbean got started in 1939. Officials from the parent service announced the Caribbean arm would be lost following a 16 percent reduction in funding from the British government.

Other services including the Macedonian, Serbian, and Portuguese for Africa are also to be closed.

“Since the announcement, we have come to truly know the important role we have been playing across the Caribbean.
We’re going out on a high what more can any broadcaster ask for?” Caribbean Service head Debbie Ransome told the media.
