Puerto Rican musician Jerry González returns with his Afro-Latin Jazz for two shows in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He will perform with José Furito Ríos and his quintet at the Punto Fijo Café Theater at Luis A. Ferré Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 7:30pm and 10:30pm.
González is one of the most figures personalities of the world of jazz, having begun his career with the legendary Dizzy Gillepsie in the early 1970s. He then moved on to take part of the famed group La Perfecta, directed by Eddie Palmieri, and later, Manny Oquendo’s Conjunto Libre. He is, among other things, the creator of the Grupo Folclórico y Experimental Neoyorquino, “one of the most striking and revolutionary manifestations of the salsa movement.”
This seasoned artist (now 62), directs the Fort Apache Band. He is also one of the most important figures appearing in the successful documentary Calle 54, produced by Fernando Trueba, which has drawn international attention by presenting the melodic and rhythmic flavors of Afro-Caribbean music.
González has lived in Madrid for the past seven years. He has recorded three albums in Spain. The first is Jerry González y los Piratas del Flamenco (2004); the second, with arrangements by Miguel Blanco, is Music for Big Band (2007); and the third is the forthcoming Avísale a mi contrario que aquí estoy yo, produced by flamenco singer Diego El Cigala (for his label Cigala Music). The album is something of a return to the musician’s roots, with a strong taste of Afro-Cuban jazz and rumba.
