The Aruba Birdlife Conservation organization is rallying for the preservation of the local ground owl, the Shoco, by requesting that it gain the status of national bird of Aruba. At the moment, the shy, burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia arubensis) has not obtained a protected status and is threatened by a variety of predators such as boa constrictors and other dangers, among others, mass tourism. Therefore, the organization is seeking a protected status for this rare bird.
The Aruba Birdlife Conservation organization aims to protect Aruban biodiversity in general and birds in particular. Among other things, the foundation focuses on increasing the survival chances of species of wild birds by promoting their preservation and conservation.
