In the Dominican Republic, Eddy Herrera celebrates his 25th anniversary as a merengue singer, and his 20th year as a solo performer. He performed at the Plaza Juan Barón on the Malecón in Santo Domingo tonight (January 28) and will be in concert on January 30 at the Monumento in Santiago.
Dominican Today reports that “Salsa king El Canario and urban music specialist Magic Juan will join him for the show, which will take place before he goes touring New York, Miami, Panama, Venezuela and Colombia.”
Eddy José Herrera de los Ríos was born in the Dominican Republic, in the city of Santiago de Los Caballeros. He began to get involved in music at nine years old. At the age of 15, he won second place at the Festival of the Voice of Santiago, and at 17 he won the first prize. He is the winner of more than seven Casandra Awards. After a few years as an architecture student he decided to join the Wilfrido Vargas merengue group. His first international success was “El jardinero,” which was launched three months after joining the group. He stayed in that group from 1984 to 1990, when he began his career as a solo artist.
