Actor and comedian Miguel Ángel Álvarez, better known as “Johnny el Men” for his role as a Puerto Rican man and his daily struggles in New York City, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2011. He was buried beside the grave of his friend, painter Rafael Tufiño, in the cemetery Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi in Old San Juan. The renowned actor died of respiratory failure at age 84.
A ceremony was held as a tribute at the Francisco Arriví Theater in Santurce before the burial. After a call for reflection by Father Willie Peñaevent, there were various performances by Álvarez’ friends, such as Ramón Rodríguez and his trio “Los Andinos;” Zafra Negra’s Zaki Malavé (who was the first artist hired by the record label created by the actor last November, Clandestino Record); and many others.
His son, Miguel Ángel Álvarez Sufront, said, “We will try to preserve and perpetuate my father’s work. Now we will create the Miguel Ángel Álvarez Foundation to continue his work and his legacy.”
