Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded to prison, serving Guyana Defense Force Major Bruce Munroe, 36; his wife Carol-Ann Munroe, 39, headmistress of Young Achievers Academy; and former Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Wharton on charges for the capital offense of treason in Guyana. It is unclear who the fourth person is. They face death by hanging if found guilty. This is the first time that a woman has been charged with treason in Guyana.
Several news sources report that police claim that between December 1, 2009, and December 18, 2010, the trio plotted to “level war” within Guyana to force President Bharrat Jagdeo out of office and to compel the government to change its policies. State media have linked the charges to a series of violent incidents, including a gun attack on a major police station and attempted arson at a Supreme Court building.
The defendants were ordered to remain in custody until January 7, 2011.
