George Clooney will receive a special Emmy Award on August 29 for his humanitarian efforts around the world, more recently for Haiti this year. The actor, producer, screenwriter, and director will be honored for hosting the Hope for Haiti Now telethon fundraiser for Haiti’s earthquake victims, through which he and many other performers were able to raise 58 million dollars, as well as his efforts to raise funds for victims of hurricane Katrina and raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur.
John Shaffner, chairman and CEO of the Television Academy, stated that Clooney was an obvious choice because “He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to (act) on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need.”
