The University of the West Indies-Cave Hill, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, presents “Sarah, Mother of the Nation,” a play depicting the life and times of Sarah Ann Gill. The theatrical piece, written by Hilary Beckles and directed by C.M. Harclyde Walcott, will be staged on April 28, 29, and 30 and May 1 and 2, at 8:00pm at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, UWI- Cave Hill, Barbados.
The play focuses on the antislavery politics of The Rt. Excellent Sarah Ann Gill (1795-1866), a Methodist missionary of color, who braved adverse conditions and constant threat of legal and professional endangerment to keep Methodism alive. She is considered to be the heroine of Methodism and freedom of religion.
