Changes to Barbados’ Crop-Over Festival

In Barbados, Minister of Community Development and Culture Steve Blackett announced changes for this year’s Crop-Over Festival. Among them is a longer route for Kadooment revelers and the rebranding of the Party Monarch and Sweet Soca Competition to “Soca Royale”, which will now take place at Bushy Park in St. Philip. The festival, which has as its theme “Follow me to Crop-Over,” will begin on Saturday, July 3, with a procession from the streets of Bridgetown to Queen’s Park.

A new feature has been added: the Fore-day Morning Jam, a sunrise beach party. Other changes are that two youth events—Junior Kadooment and the Junior Monarch Competition—will be merged into one event. Pic-o-De-Crop Finals will be held at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown Market, and will begin a day earlier.

The minister explained that this year, the government will actively seek to include the different ethnicities living in on the island: “Throughout Queen’s Park, there will be wide ranging activities, including side walk cafes, performance areas, play areas for children, cultural villages and, for the first time, displays and stalls set up by the multi-national groups living in Barbados.”
