Art Exhibition: Lorenzo Homar, Work and Legacy

The “… de Museo”-Galería de Arte [yes, the art gallery is called “... de Museo”-Art Gallery] in Santurce is celebrating its ten year anniversary with an exhibition of works by leading Puerto Rican artist Lorenzo Homar, who passed away in 2004. “Lorenzo Homar: Obra y legado” [Lorenzo Homar, Work and Legacy] opened yesterday, March 11, 2010, presenting 13 pieces by Homar on the ground floor and Works from the artist’s personal collection on the second floor. These include works by renowned artists such as Myrna Báez, Rafael López del Campo, Manuel Hernández Acevedo, and Rafael Tufiño, among others. The exhibition will be on view until March 25.

According to gallery director Carmen Correa, this is a collaborative effort of the gallery with Susan and Laura Homar, the artist’s daughters, who proposed the exhibition at the gallery because it is known for promoting classic Puerto Rican art. The gallery is located at 707 San Jorge Street in Santurce, Puerto Rico. All pieces will be available for sale.

Lorenzo Homar (1913-2004) is one of Puerto Rico’s greatest graphic artists and has been hailed by many as the father of Puerto Rican graphic arts. He studied at the New York Arts Students’ League. After serving in the United States Army (which earned him a Purple Heart), he studied painting, design and typography at the Pratt Institute while working at the House of Cartier as an apprentice designer. He returned to the island in the 1950s to serve as director and graphic artist of the Division of Education to the Community (DIVEDCO). Homar designed the logo of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and he established the institute’s Graphic Arts Workshop. A master in graphic printmaking, and particularly silkscreen, his work has been acclaimed on the island and worldwide.
