Repeating Islands

St Lucia’s Nobel Prize laureate, Derek Walcott, celebrates his 80^th birthday today. Earlier this month, the University of the West Indies at St Augustine, Trinidad, where Walcott lived for many years, marked the milestone with a four-day-academic conference titled, ’Interlocking Basins of a Globe’ that showcased the tremendous contribution Walcott has made to art and literature. The four-day event began with an exhibition of the Walcott’s family’s private collection of his paintings. The conference ran from January 13 to 15. The event included the production of Fragments, a play based on Walcott’s poetry and essays.
