St Lucia’s Nobel Prize laureate, Derek Walcott, celebrates his 80th birthday today. Earlier this month, the University of the West Indies at St Augustine, Trinidad, where Walcott lived for many years, marked the milestone with a four-day-academic conference titled, ’Interlocking Basins of a Globe’ that showcased the tremendous contribution Walcott has made to art and literature. The four-day event began with an exhibition of the Walcott’s family’s private collection of his paintings. The conference ran from January 13 to 15. The event included the production of Fragments, a play based on Walcott’s poetry and essays.
