Please note that the deadline for the Third Graduate Student Conference “Caribbean without Borders: Interconnections and Extensions” is right around the corner, November 15th, 2009.
The 3rd Caribbean without Borders Graduate Student Conference will be held at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras on March 15-16, 2010. The conference is sponsored by the English Department (College of Humanities) at the UPR. The conference welcomes presentations in English, Spanish, French, or any Caribbean language on the literature, languages and cultures of the Caribbean. Exploring the idea of a Caribbean without borders, this year’s theme encourages comparative studies that highlight intra-Caribbean and extended Caribbean perspectives. A focus of the conference will be comparative internal Caribbean dynamics and/or those on an extended Caribbean region, including the U.S. South, Central and South America, West Africa, and other sites within the wider Atlantic region.
The keynote speaker for the 3rd Caribbean without Borders Conference will be Myriam J. A. Chancy, Haitian-Canadian writer and scholar born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Her books include The Scorpion’s Claw (2005), Spirit of Haiti (2003), Framing Silence: Revolutionary Novels by Haitian Women (1997), and Searching for Safe Spaces: Afro-Caribbean Women Writers in Exile (1997). Dr. Chancy is Professor of English at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Vice-President of the Association of Caribbean Women Writers & Scholars (2008-2010).
