Former Prime Minister of Dominica Dame Eugenia Charles was remembered yesterday for her contribution to the preservation of democracy in Dominica with a mass in her memory four years after her death. “She is certainly being remembered for ensuring that democracy survived in Dominica. She was one of the founders of the Dominica Freedom Party when the then Labour Government chose to pass a shut-your-mouth bill and we have to thank her for ensuring that democracy remained in Dominica,” said Judith Pestaina, who served the Charles administration and is now leader of her party, the Dominica Freedom Party. Pestaina said Charles’s contribution of democracy was a “significant achievement” that must be singled out. She said the democracy of a country cannot be taken for granted and “we have to ensure that democracy continues to survive in the region and in Dominica.”
