Havana said goodbye to summer this weekend with a nationwide Feast of Books that featured thousands of titles in more than 30 cities.
In Havana the book festival took place by the seafront, along the Avenida del Puerto from the Amphitheater of the Centro Histórico to the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana, a UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity site.
The focus of this last weekend of the Rutas y Andares Project for this summer is a literary walk through the spaces in the city linked to writer Alejo Carperntier and his work. A new edition of his novel El siglo de las luces (Explosion in the Cathedral) was presented at the Cathedral Square during a program that included a performance by the internationally-known pianist José María Vitier. He played music from the film of the novel directed by Humberto Solás. There were also special presentations of a number of works, among them Dora Alonso’s El cochero azul, Nicolás Guillén’s Cantos de Revolución, Marta Rojas’s El Equipaje Amarillo, and Froilán Escobar’s Martí a flor de labios.
