Turks and Caicos lovely despite political turmoil

…so claims a travel article in London’s Telegraph newspaper, seeking perhaps to salvage the important tourist industry in a British territory that has experienced significant political turmoil in recent months following a corruption scandal.

Peace and charm still reign on this sliver of British territory, 40 islands and cays (smaller islands), of which only eight are inhabited. The first part of their name, Turks, comes from the ubiquitous cacti topped with a squarish red growth that reminded the islands’ first visitors of a Turkish fez. The second part, Caicos, means “small island” in Creole.

The islands are flat, with low vegetation, and boast one main centre, Providenciales, home to many hotels, bars, casinos and restaurants, including the exceptional Coyaba. There is plenty of fast-paced nightlife at places such as the Nikki Beach Resort, but also peace and tranquillity for those, like us, who seek it.

Not a word about political corruption or the recent British takeover of the government . . .
