Haitian author and Nobel Prize candidate Frankétienne (born Frank Étienne in 1936) recently visited the Dominican Republic to deliver a lecture at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and to participate in an art exhibition at the Ajoupa Gallery.
Frankétienne, who is a poet, playwright, novelist, painter, and musician, met privately with Ulrick Gaillard, Batey Relief Alliance’s CEO to discuss the organization’s humanitarian work in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Also at the meeting were Batey’s executive director, María Virtudes Berroa, and its medical director, Dr. Raymond Thertulien.
Frankétienne has published more than 30 works in French and Créole, including plays, essays, and poetry collections. Some of his work, written under Haiti’s Duvalier dictatorship, depicts the plight of a segregated and oppressed society that has been a source for the largest migrations in history. He was the founder— with Philoctète and Jean-Claude Fignolé— of the Spiralist movement.

My name is Yves Girodier. I am so proud of Frank Etienne. He was my teacher thirty years ago when I was in Haiti. He was a formidable source of inspiration for me so that at the age of fifteen I published my first book titled On the sea side of love, Sur les Rives de l amour. I really think he is one the biggest intellectual professor I have ever had in my live. In Venezuela I have already written and get published three editions of ma second book titled INCREDIBLE, BUT TRUE I mean, INCROYABLE MAIS VRAI. I am so far away of being capable of imitating Frank Etienne in relation to the amount of works, pems and essays written by him! But, anyway, I consider he continues being for me the greatest source of inspiration I have ever had in my carrier as a writer.
