Puerto Rican novelist Mayra Santos Febres has written the script for a new Puerto Rican film, Kabo & Platón: Más allá del reguetón (Kabo and Platón: Beyond Reggaeton) to be released this coming fall. The story follows the lives of two young rappers trying to break into the music business. It looks at the sociological aspects of the genre and the complex financial system that underpins it. The leading roles are played by Aramis Benítez (“Platón”) and Albert Torres (“Kabo”), both aspiring musicians who are new to acting. The supporting cast includes René Monclova, Victoria Espinosa, and Magali Carrasquillo. The film is directed by Edmundo H. Rodríguez, who also helmed Las dos caras de Jano (2008).
Producer Luis Collazo argues that the film’s visual and interpretive treatment will showcase the development of the Puerto Rican film industry. “As a producer, one seeks to raise the bar. Considering the technical aspects, the creativity that has gone into the film, the script by a proven narrator, we have a film of high quality. We have a timeless story that does not rely on fashion.”
Collazo hopes for a release before November to avoid competition from the typical Thanksgiving and Christmas blockbusters.
