
Mairym Cruz-Bernal is hosting a creative writing workshop focusing on confessional literature with emphasis on memoir, poetic prose, vignette, essay, and poetry. The workshop will run from August 24, 2009, to February 1, 2010. It will take place on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30pm in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Workshops include exercises in literary creation, lectures, guest writers, and a monthly one-on-one interview for preparation of a creative work for publication. Topics of discussion will include literary study to understand writing techniques, confessional and post-confessional literature, poetry of witnessing, literature written by women (“The Word and the Body”), “Fear, the Circus, Eros, and Silence,” and lectures by guest writers.
Cruz-Bernal is a poet and essayist. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College and is presently the president of PEN Club-Puerto Rico. A prolific writer, her books have been translated into Arabic, Croatian, English, German, Italian, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese, and Slovenian. Her works include Poemas para no morir (1995), Cuando El es adiós (1997), On Her Face the Light of La Luna (1997), Soy dos mujeres en silencio que te miran (1998), Querida amiga, querido amigo: Epistolario (1999, co-authored with singer Danny Rivera), Encajes negros (1999), Alas de islas (2003), Ensayo sobre las cosas simples (2006), and Enferma de mi deseo (2006).
