Plans are underway for a movie on the life of Dominican über playboy Porfirio Rubirosa starring Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. The movie, to be directed by Peruvian director Luis Llosa, would be filmed from a script by Llosa’s cousin, the award-winning writer Mario Vargas Llosa. The two had earlier collaborated in the film adaptation of Vargas Llosa’s novel La fiesta del chivo, based on the political career of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. According to reports in the Peruvian Press, Banderas has already signed on to the project, to be produced by Sierralta Entertainment, and they are seeking to sign Mexican actress Salma Hayek to play Rubirosa’s first wife, Flor de Oro Trujillo, daughter of the dictator. Rubirosa went on to marry French actress Danielle Darrieux and U.S. heiresses Barbara Hutton and Doris Duke. The movie would be filmed in the Dominican Republic, Spain, and the Czech Republic.
This has been rumored for many years. I have written a musical based on the life of , which has been in the works for many years, and met with Banderas about it. He loved the idea but only wanted to make contemporary movies and wanted a break from the theater. He was doing Nine at the time. Anyway, now he is supposedly doing Rubirosa the movie. And returning for Zorba the Greeek on Broadway. Ironically he could be appearing opposite our show which is going into production next year. There’s no business like show business.
