The newly opened Miramar Cultural Arts Park in Miramar, Florida, will be the site for this year’s Caribbean American Book and Art Fair, to be celebrated from June 18 to the 21, 2009. The Caribbean-American Book and Art Fair (CABA), organized by a group that includes Caribbean scholar Carole Boyce Davis, among others, is the result of collaboration by Broward County institutions and community organizations engaged in the exploration and production of Caribbean knowledge. This year, the international literary fest is being dedicated to Nobel Prize winner Derek Walcott, who will read from his work, and will feature novelist Paule Marshall, who will be reading from her new autobiography, Triangular Road. The fair will also feature exhibits and programming on Haitian art, with the participation of Jamaican choreographer and scholar Rex Nettleford. Other featured authors include Eintou Pearl Springer, Poet Laureate of Port of Spain; Carole Boyce Davis, whose recent book, Left of Karl Marx, tells of the activism, writing, and legacy of Claudia Jones (1915-1964); Joan Cartwright, author of History of African-American Jazz and Blues, Amazing Music women and So, You Want To Be A Singer? A Manual for Up and Coming Divas; Marcia Douglas, author of Madam Fate, Electricity Comes to Cocoa Bottom and Notes from a Writer’s Book of Cures and Spells; and Geoffrey Philp, author of the children’s book, Grandpa Sydney’s Anancy Stories,  among other works.

The fair marks the celebration of June as Caribbean-American month, which includes ONE BOOK ONE CARIBBEAN, the annual community wide reading initiative. Each year, a Caribbean writer’s book is selected and recommended for reading by members of the community, high schools, colleges and universities. This year’s selected title is Triangular Road. The activities related to the initiative will take place between May 15 and June 15.
