The Institute of Caribbean Studies (IEC-Instituto de Estudios Caribeños) at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras announces the next lecture in its Conferencias Caribeñas 4 series, “Hacia la construcción y transformación del trabajo social y política social en el Caribe Antillano: Cuba, Puerto Rico y República Dominicana” [Towards Construction and Transformation of Social and Political Work in the Hispanic Caribbean: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic] by Dagmar Guardiola, Graduate School of Social Work, UPR-RP. Dr. Carmen Centeno, Spanish Department, UPR-Bayamón, will serve as commentator. The activity will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Amphitheater 108, Carmen de Alvarado Building, School of Social Sciences, at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras.
Dr. Dagmar Guardiola will offer a comprehensive and comparative historical analysis of socio-cultural, economic, and political aspects of the Hispanophone Caribbean to highlight the commonalities, differences, and transformations that have inked these islands. From the standpoint of political and social sciences, the dialogue between Guardiola and Centeno will address the challenges and expectations of the region as it faces globalization policies. Dr. Guardiola is the editor of the book El trabajo social en el Caribe hispano antillano (Río Piedras: Editorial UPR, 2006). Her research focuses on social work practices in the Caribbean.
