The Mighty Sparrow Missed at the Summit of the Americas

sparrow_obama21

The 5th Summit of the Americas has been over now for more than a week, but it is still the subject of much conversation in Trinidad. The press has taken note of a certain level of popular disappointment at not seeing noted calypsonian Dr. Slinger Francisco-best known as The Mighty Sparrow-in the opening ceremony. The Mighty Sparrow (born in Grenada but raised in Trinidad) is known worldwide as the “Calypso King of the World.” His presence had been expected in the opening ceremony because of his links to Barack Obama, whom he endorsed early in his campaign for the presidency and to whom he dedicated a song, “Barack the Magnificent.”

One prominent musician who did spend time with President Obama during the opening ceremony was Montserrat musician Alphonsus “Arrow” Cassel, known widely for his mega hit “Hot, Hot, Hot,” a blend of soca and rock rhythms that took the world by storm. Arrow told Caribbean Net News that “To be invited to perform for the first president of the United States who happens to be of African descent, is an honour. That is a very special feeling for me. Obama’s victory is important at more levels. It is not just about addressing race. He has come at a time when the world needs to be inspired. His message of change has readily inspired and given hope to the world.” He described Obama as “energetic and charismatic”.
