Grenada Drum Festival, May 2-3, 2009
The community of Tivoli, between the parishes of St. Andrew and St. Patrick, is home to the Tivoli Drummers and the birthplace of the Grenada Drum Festival. Founded in 1995 with the goal of spreading the Drum Culture, the Tivoli Drummers have developed a unique style of choreographed drumming that is not seen elsewhere.
The idea for the Grenada Drum Festival was born when Livingston Krumah Nelson, the Director of the Tivoli Drummers visited Guadeloupe in 2000. There he witnessed the festival of the drums referred to as Gwoka. The first Drum Festival in Grenada was held in 2001 with several purposes in mind: to demonstrate traditional drumming, dancing, and rituals surrounding the drums, to offer workshops in dance and drumming, to display of the various types of drums, and to showcase skilled drum players.
The festival takes place in a cultural village, Krumahville (Tivoli, St. Andrew) featuring traditional drumming and dancing, as well as Grenadian dishes- such as barbecue chicken, roast breadfruit, smoke herring, and roti- and local arts, artifacts, and displays of craft. Drum Fest 2009 will also include games, folklore, and historical information of interest to the community and visitors. Although the festival showcases local drummers, performing groups are expected from Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and other countries.
