
As we wrote last Friday April 17 (“Aimé Césaire Stamp Will be Released on April 21st“), a postal stamp commemorating the Martinican poet and politician’s career was available for sale today. The statement that accompanied the release praised Césaire as “without doubt one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, one whose vision of the world left a profound mark on French and world literature.”
Only two other political figures in French history have been honored with stamp issues on the first anniversary of their deaths: Charles De Gaulle and François Mitterand.
