Janet Jagan, former President of Guyana and widow of Cheddi Jagan, died on Saturday March 28 of a stomach aneurism in Georgetown. The native of Chicago had succeeded her husband as President after his death in March 1997 in an effort to preserve his legacy. In 1950, the couple had formed the People’s Progressive Party, committed to winning self-government for the colony. Her controversial tenure in office ended in August 1999, when she stepped down pleading heart complaints.
