Trinidadian writer V. S. Naipaul is among the nominees for the Man Booker International Prize, a biennial literary award established in 2005 and awarded to a living author of fiction of any nationality, provided the work is either originally written in English or widely available in English translation. It seeks to reward a writer’s overall achievement and international reputation and influence. The first award was given to Ismail Kadare of Albania; the second was awarded to Nigeria’s Chinua Achebe. Other nominees this year include Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, American author Joyce Carol Oates, and Kenyan novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o.
