Jean-Paul Duviols and Pedro Ureña-Rib have compiled a wealth of information on Caribbean cultures in their beautiful volume, Dictionnaire culturel des Caraïbes. Written with students in mind but also directed at a wider audience-those who wish to learn more about the rich cultural diversity of the Caribbean at large-this dictionary offers clear and concise entries on a variety of topics in the areas of history, biography, literature, visual arts, music, and popular traditions. The authors’ goals are to provide a wide-ranging text for teachers and students interested in the Caribbean that will allow for a synergetic approach to the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish-speaking worlds, to enrich teaching options for instructors of languages and cultures, and to disseminate information about the leading figures and cultural production of the many countries connected by the Caribbean Sea.
Their broad selection of geographical areas include Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Grenada, the Grenadines, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, French Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saba, St. Barthélemy (St. Barts), St. Eustatius, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Martin, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Venezuela.
