Jungle Bay Resort is located in the South East District of Dominica, whose representative to Parliament is the Honourable Ron Green. Green is the political leader of the United Workers’ Party and, since August of 2008, the officially sworn-in leader of the Opposition in Dominica. He joined our group for a presentation and question-and-answer session about Dominica’s present and future.
The students’ questions centered primarily on development issued and Green strongly advocated “green” development-from ecotourism, which Dominica has marketed successfully through their “Nature Island of the Caribbean” campaign, to geothermal energy projects that would tap into the island’s volcanic resources to produce energy for local consumption and for export to nearby islands. Green, who seemed still deeply troubled by imputations of corruption against his party’s former leader, Earl Williams, identified corruption as a serious threat to the type of participatory democracy needed in Dominica to assure everyone a voice in determining the future of the island.
