As part of their conference cycle, Conferencias Caribeñas 4, The Institute of Caribbean Studies, of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, announces the lecture, “‘Porque tú puedes ser negra y tener alma blanca’: identidades y memorias afropuertorriqueñas en el oeste de Puerto Rico,” by Dr. Jocelyn Géliga Vargas and the Colectivo de Testimonios Afropuertorriqueños [Afro-Puerto Rican Testimonial Collective]. The lecture is based on an on-going collaboration between Professors Jocelyn Géliga Vargas and José Irizarry (shown in photo) with community leaders from Aguadilla and Hormigueros and students from the departments of English and Social Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaquez. Dr. Isar Godreau, a cultural anthropologist at UPR-Cayey, who specializes on racial discourses in Puerto Rico, will serve as commentator.
The activity will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 P. M. in the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building, Room 108, School of Social Sciences, at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras.
